    Phoenix

Phoenix is the capital and largest city of Arizona and one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States with a population estimated at 1.5 million in 2013. While the economy of the region was originally based on farming and cattle, it has since turned to high-tech industry. The military also has a big presence in the area due to the Luke Air Force Base in the suburbs of the city.

Phoenix is home to several performing arts venues. The Phoenix Symphony Hall in downtown, which is designated as a Phoenix Point of Pride, is home to the Phoenix Symphony, Arizona Opera, Ballet Arizona. The Phoenix Symphony is the city’s only full-time professional orchestra and it offers concerts in the city as well as presentations throughout central Arizona. Phoenix is also home to the new Arizona Opera Center and the Orpheum Theatre, a historic theatre that was first used for vaudeville acts in the 1920s and 1930s.

Phoenix has a rapidly developing art scene with several sculptures and galleries throughout downtown. One of the most well-known sculptures is Her Secret Is Patience, which is suspended above the Phoenix Civic Space Park in downtown. There are also several museums in the region such as the Phoenix Art Museum, the Arizona Military Museum, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix, and the Musical Instrument Museum which opened in 2010. The Phoenix Art Museum is the most visited museum in the city. Designed by Alden Dow, a student of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the museum presents festivals, independent art films, and live performances throughout the year.
